Dear Heidi ,

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Elephant Nature Park. Please find your booking confirmation below.

Name: Heidi
Start Date: 28-Dec-2009
Duration: 2 weeks

Getting Started
---------------------
All volunteer positions start at 8:00am from our Chiang Mai office on Monday morning, and finish at approximately 6:00pm on Sunday. Please arrive at our office by 8:00am on your first day. If you would like us to pick you up from your Chiang Mai hotel/guesthouse, please call or email to tell us where you will be staying by 6pm on the Saturday prior to the start of your volunteer experience.

On your date of departure, if you need to return earlier to Chiang Mai (to catch a train, for example), please notify the office at least 48 hours in advance.

Getting to our Chiang Mai Office
-----------------------------------------
Some people have reported that taxis and other transport drivers as well as travel agents and hotels have informed them that Elephant Nature Park is closed, doesn't exist, or has befallen a whole range of calamities. Please ignore these bogus claims and call us if you have any doubts or cannot find the office:

Elephant Nature Foundation
1 Ratmakka Road, T. Phra Sing, A. Muang
Chiang Mai, Thailand 50200

Telephone: 053-272-855 (+66-53-272-855 outside of Thailand)

Safety
----------
Volunteers are not permitted to wander off or get close to the elephants on their own. This is for your own safety. Elephants all have different personalities and can be dangerous if they are being confronted by strangers.

Elephants are generally very gentle creatures who return love in abundance. However, they are wild animals and their behavior can be unpredictable. They live to approximately the same age as humans and the youngsters are similar to those of other species in that they love to play. Elephants of all ages are very strong and they may become boisterous if annoyed. You must be careful when around them and follow the instructions of our staff at all times.

As part of our insurance policy you will be required to complete an emergency contact form and disclaimer before entering Park property.

Dress Code
----------------
Polite dress in Thailand is very different from other nations and it is quite easy to cause the locals offense. Although locals at the Park are more relaxed and tolerant, we ask you to refrain from wearing sleeveless garments, tank tops, bathing suits, or bikinis while volunteering at the Park.

Also please keep in mind when packing for your volunteer stay that you'll have the option of washing elephants in the river. Volunteers and staff typically wear shorts and t-shirts into the water.

What to Bring
--------------------
Volunteers should bring comfortable clothes that they won't mind getting dirty. Depending on the time of year, rain gear and mud boots might also be useful. Volunteers should also bring a towel and toiletries, a flashlight/torch, mosquito repellent, a camera, and sunscreen. You may also want to bring a little spending money to do some shopping in our gift shop. All proceeds from gift shop sales go directly to helping our elephants or the mahouts who care for them.

What's Provided
-----------------------
The cost of volunteering at Elephant Nature Park includes roundtrip transportation to your hotel/guesthouse in Chiang Mai, an expert guide, breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the duration of your stay, and bottled water/coffee/tea. Your room will be equipped with a fan, bedding and pillows, and a mosquito net, and it will be located near a shared western-style bathroom.

Terms and Conditions
----------------------------
Any unpaid balance on the fee for volunteering will be payable on your first day.

You must be 18 years or older to volunteer at Elephant Nature Park, unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Parents/legal guardians are responsible for their children’s well-being and whereabouts at all times while at any Elephant Nature Foundation office and at Elephant Nature Park.

Transport to/from the Park is provided from Chiang Mai and is included in the cost of your volunteer stay. Airfares to/from Thailand and Chiang Mai are not included.

We reserve the right to terminate any volunteer position, at any time and without refund, should a volunteer's performance prove unsatisfactory and/or should a volunteer's actions prove dangerous to the well-being of themselves, the animals at Elephant Nature Park, or other visitors and volunteers.

Please arrive at our office by 8:00am on your first day. If you would like us to pick you up from your Chiang Mai accommodation, please call or email to tell us where you will be staying by 6pm on the Saturday prior to the start of your volunteer experience.

If you have to reschedule your visit, please contact Elephant Nature Foundation at Volunteer@ElephantNatureFoundation.org with your full information, including the date(s) you would like to reschedule. If you have to change dates within 7 days prior to your accepted arrival date, there will be a fee of US$20 per date change. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to change dates within 7 days of arrival as positions are often fully booked.

If you cancel your reservation more than 48 hours before your expected start date, a full refund (less any PayPal fees) may be possible. If you cancel your reservation within 48 hours of your expected start date then a refund will not be possible. If you have to leave while at the Park only the unused days will be refunded.

It may be possible to extend your stay once you are at the Park: this will be at the discretion of Park staff and dependent on availability.

Elephant Nature Foundation makes no guarantees that volunteer stays will proceed as described within our website (or in any other description of events, timetable, or schedule) depending on local conditions, emergencies, and animal behavior any given day.

By joining the volunteer program at Elephant Nature Park, volunteers accept that they are solely responsible for their own health and safety and fully understand and accept the conditions outlined above. You will be required to sign a disclaimer and provide emergency contact info before entering Park property.

To be a volunteer you must be able to work within a team, use your initiative, follow instructions from our full-time staff, be flexible, cooperative, friendly, and demonstrate a willingness to work long hours. Please respect local customs, laws, and dress appropriately (conservative dress). You are expected to be in good health to enable you to actively partake in the programs. We ask that you be available for work 6 days per week from around 07:00 until 17:00 (some extra hours may be required).

While at the Park you are permitted to take photos, video, and audio recordings for your own personal use. Elephant Nature Foundation holds the commercial copyright on all media recordings taken at the Park. Please obtain written permission from Elephant Nature Foundation if you wish to take any photos or film for distribution or resale.

As a volunteer you must seek written permission to publish any article or other material concerning the staff, project, or in any way involving Elephant Nature Park.

I realized that there's a national holiday on the 23rd. If I take one more day of nenkyuu, I can have two extra days! The Monday after I come home is also a holiday so I could extend my trip for two extra days at the end too.

I went over to JTB to see if I could change my flight so I could be in Thailand for longer, but I'd have to pay a cancellation fee of 13000 and then rebook the flight. So that turned out to be a no go. I'm not sure if I'll take the 23rd off but I can stay in Kansai for a few days after I come back to Japan.

=/ I should have checked my work schedule before I went to JTB.
